Would the Magni Heresy/Modi 3+ stack be an upgrade in sound quality from the Zen Dac? I know I would be losing the balanced output and bass boost function of the Zen if I opt for the Schiit stack, however the power differences even compared to the balanced output of the Zen are staggering (230mW UnBal and 330mW Bal vs 2.4W UnBal), and I never find myself using the bass boost of the Zen either. The Zen Dac drives each headphone completely fine, but that's not what I'm wondering. I currently have an iFi Zen Dac which has been my only experience with headphone amps/dacs, with which I use with my Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80ohm, Tygr 300 R, and Sennheiser HD660S (I use this headphone with the balanced output of the Zen). I've been doing some research on dacs and amps recently and have heard how good the Schiit Magni 3 Heresy and Modi 3+ are in terms of specs and power output. First, the Zen DAC V2 features an XMOS 16-Core chip to process audio data. When people get defensive, they stop listening and learning. Schiit delivers a lot of value for the price in its DAC. The Modi 3 delivers a lot of value for its price point, no doubt, but the 4490 -> 4493 upgrade alone is worthy of consideration. Raffles and giveaways also fall into this category. From what I am gathering, the Modius with the 4493 DAC and balanced out for another 100 is something to strongly consider. overall much more balanced sound allowing more types of music to shine. slightly better soundstage Schiit stack Good bass, significantly better mids/highs.
